Broxton Ridge Plantation: The Broxton Bridge Plantation was one of the points along the Salkahatchie River where Sherman’s Union Army tried to penetrate the South Carolina defenses of the Confederate Army led by Major General Lafayette McLaws. The Salkahatchie River runs 4 miles along the plantation property. The Plantation has been in the family for nine generations and today uses two circa 1850 family homes for anchoring its hunting activities spread over 7000 acres.

Denmark Depot: The Denmark Depot (circa 1920)was a major hub for the Atlantic Coast Line and subsequent Seaboard Line. Initially it was used for agricultural freight but also handled passenger traffic as demand grew. It is still a working, passenger-boarding station for Amtrak.

Jim Harrison was an American artist and writer whose work is known for chronicling earlier twentieth century rural life. Harrison’s paintings are featured in personal and corporate art collections across the United States, and he had successful one-man shows at the Hammer Galleries in New York City and the Conacher Gallery in San Francisco.

Middle Place Learning and Information Station
Middle Place Learning and Information Station stands were Middle Place School once stood. Middle Place School, built in 1892, was a one roomed schoolhouse built by the local African American population as a place to educate children during the day and adults at night. Now, Middle Place Learning and Information Station has a collection of artifacts as well as quilts, dolls, and other works of art.

Paw Paw Country Club
This country club contains an 18-hole golf course complete with lakes, woods, fairways, and hybrid grasses. Paw Paw Country Club is home to the Old Friends Invitational Gold Classic which raises for an 4-year academic scholar for a deserving Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School student.

Rivers Bridge State Historic Site
Rivers Bridge State Historic Site is a  Civil War battlefield. It is a site of one of the Confederacy’s last stands against General William T. Sherman’s sweep across the South, the earthen fortifications at Rivers Bridge stand as silent monuments to the fierce resistance that raged there on February 2-3, 1865. Today, Rivers Bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only State Historic Site in South Carolina that commemorates the Civil War.

Woodlands Plantation (William Gilmore Simms Estate)

Woodlands Plantation is the historic plantation estate of prolific Southern poet, novelist, historian, and state legislator William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) of Charleston. He was considered a leading literary voice of the antebellum southern United States. This 650-acre estate was partially built by Sims in 1836.
